Fear has always driven us to make decisions based off of an emotion. Possibly the fear of failure, the fear of uncertainty, or the fear of not having control, because after all, isn’t that what fear is; being in a situation and not having control over the outcome?
Too often, I meet business owners who neglect the opportunity to promote and market their entity through social media. Why is this? What I have found is 87% of business owners who are NOT currently implementing a social media strategy simply avoid social media all together BECAUSE they have a fear of “uncertainty”. They are uncertain of “how” to create an efficient social media strategy and they are especially fearful of not knowing how to operate the different forms of social media. It’s not that they don’t see the value, but they hide behind “ignorance”.
Now, I’m not saying someone is “stupid” when I refer to ignorance. But what I am saying is they are ignorant to the “Know How”, the education and value of social media because no one has previously educated them. In other words, they just don’t fully comprehend how social media works and they might be fearful to admit it. They are “uncertain”.
So, how can we fix this?
With each client I take on, I create a segment of time that focuses directly on the education of social media. Not necessarily teaching them how to do it, but educating them on how it works. When you provide education and knowledge to the customer, you provide an “added value” above your required service and they begin to understand your importance more effectively. Telling someone how it works is one thing, but showing them its effectiveness is entirely more beneficial.
Just because business owners do not understand how to utilize social media does not mean that they “want” to avoid it altogether. Nor does it mean they don’t see the value.
So think about it, we do our taxes because we know we need to. We may not all exactly understand how it works and why it can work in our favor, but we still see the value. That value increases each time we sit down with our accountants and become educated on new laws and new requirements.
Social Media Marketing works the same way for many business owners. Although they may not understand at first, they just need to be educated.
